This series started with a seven-year-old who wanted proof that “xièxie” means thank you in Chinese. She kept asking until someone checked, and she was right. That habit of asking and then checking ran through the whole first week.

What the week covered

Six days ago the fridge was full of Thanksgiving leftovers. Since then, a free AI tool has helped turn those leftovers into dinner and get a stuck message written. It explained why the sky is blue to a child, and then the two of you checked the answer together. It planned a fall-colours day trip without 14 open tabs and sorted a messy grocery list by store section. Yesterday it gave a second opinion before a big purchase.

None of it needed a paid subscription, and most of it took under ten minutes.

Week one, done. A checklist of the first seven AI at Home days, all marked complete: Day 0, checking a child's question; Day 1, dinner from leftovers; Day 2, the message you put off; Day 3, why is the sky blue; Day 4, a day trip without 14 tabs; Day 5, the messy list sorted; Day 6, a second opinion before you buy. Below it: which day did you try? Pick one you skipped and try it tonight.

Two habits that made it work

The prompts that worked best were specific. Compare these two:

Give me a recipe.

Turn leftover turkey and roasted vegetables into dinner for four in 30 minutes.

The second one gets you a meal you can cook tonight.

The first answer was rarely the final one. You edited the draft, asked a follow-up question and checked the parts that mattered, the same way a curious kid keeps asking. AI gave you a start, and you made it yours.

Try it this weekend

Pick the day you skipped and give it ten minutes. If you are not sure where to start, use this prompt:

I have [a job I keep putting off]. Here are the details: [two or three sentences]. Help me get started, and ask me one question if you need more information.

Then read what comes back, change what doesn’t fit and check anything that matters.

Which day did you try, and which one did you skip?

Yesterday was a second opinion before you buy (opens in a new tab). Day 8: the fine print in plain words (opens in a new tab).
